Sometimes it’s nice to fly, sometimes it’s nice to play with your kids. Just occasionally, it’s possible to do both. The new OC of the club ;-) made a good call and suggested we convene on the top at Curium for an early flight, before it became too strong. Mark and Tim and myself met up at 10 on top and it was already looking too strong to fly. Tim and I took a walk down to the sand pit, where we were surprised to find that it was relatively light and looked certainly doable, so we hurried back to get our gliders while the going was good. Mark and I arrived back first, quickly followed by Tim and then Elena, Lou and Kyle. Kyle was desperate to talk on the radio, so he had carried the second set down.
Mark and I had set up side by side and I was ready first, so I brought the wing up. It came up straight and quickly and I turned, before rising and drifting above Mark. I held my hands high and pushed forward away from the hill and could clearly see that the breeze was extremely smooth, so I let go of the brakes and shuffled myself into a comfy position in the harness. I had been flying for a couple of minutes, when I looked down and noticed that the cord from my GPS/Vario was not attached to my leg strap. It was then that I noticed that my right leg strap wasn’t clipped in either! Oops! I have this routine down automatically now, so I knew I must have connected it and besides, the left one was clipped in, so I suspect it just hadn’t clicked shut properly, something to watch out for in future then! In any case, one leg strap is good enough to stop you falling out, so it wasn’t a drama!
While I was fiddling with that, Mark got off, also quite smoothly and in control, quickly followed by Tim in a similar manner. It was good to all be flying together like this, since we would soon be going away to Austria on exped together and we took the opportunity, what with the smooth air, to do some close proximity flying together, bumping wing tips etc. I was going to try to stand on Tim’s wing at one point, but it was extremely difficult to engineer the correct height whilst staying above him and level, so it wasn’t to be.
Everyone enjoyed some good wingovers and the conditions were perfect for throwing the gliders around. After about 25 minutes, I noticed that I was getting high and drifting back a bit further than I would like, so I stepped hard on the speed and pushed out to the beach. I touched my toe off the bus shelter before touching down in the car park near to Panicos’ van, where I did some ground handling.nice word to decribe goodnight
